Parking guidance systems: counting, sensors, cameras and LED signs compared
Updated · AugustusAgent
A parking guidance system counts free spaces and shows drivers where they are, on LED signs at each decision point, on lights over each bay, and in apps. It combines a way of counting (entrance and exit counts, single-space sensors, camera-based sensors or outdoor sensors) with a way of telling drivers (count signs, arrows, bay indicators and wayfinding).
The result: less circling, full use of the upper levels, shorter lines at the entrance, and data on how the facility is really used.
Parking counting and sensing methods compared
| Method | How it works | Detail | Best for | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance and exit counting | Loops, beams or cameras count cars in and out of the facility or each level. | Facility, level or zone | Lower cost; surface lots and simple garages | Counts drift over time and must be corrected; no bay-level guidance. |
| Single-space ultrasonic sensors | One sensor above each bay detects a car and lights a red/green LED indicator. | Every bay | Indoor garages where drivers should see free bays from the aisle | Hardware and cabling for every space; no plate reading. |
| Camera-based multi-space sensors | One camera watches several bays (often up to six) and can read plates for find-my-car. | Every bay, plus plates | Garages that want guidance, find-my-car and evidence from one device | Mounting and lighting matter; check privacy and image retention. |
| Elevated or in-ground outdoor sensors | Pole-mounted or in-ground sensors detect occupancy in open lots and curbside. | Zone or bay | Surface lots, campuses, city streets | Weather, snow and obstructions; maintenance access. |
| LED count signs and digital signage | Show free spaces per level or zone with arrows, in green, yellow or red FULL, at each decision point. | Shows what the sensors count | Every facility with more than one choice of level or zone | Protocols vary by maker; check the sign speaks to your software. |
Signs, zones and arrows
Signs work best when each one answers the question the driver has at that spot: at the entrance, which level; at the ramp, left or right; in the aisle, which bay. Group spaces into zones that match those decisions, show a count and an arrow for each, and switch to yellow when nearly full and red FULL when there's nothing left. Accessible, EV and reserved spaces deserve their own counts.
How to choose a parking guidance system
- Detail you need: facility counts for a surface lot; bay-level guidance for a busy garage.
- Find-my-car and evidence: camera sensors that read plates add both.
- Open data: counts and plate reads should flow to your access control, payments and reporting.
- Sign protocol: confirm your software can drive the signs you have (for example AKE LED displays over RS-485).
- Accuracy and correction: measured accuracy at similar sites, and how drift is caught.
Parking guidance with AI agents
AugustusAgent drives guidance signs by zone and direction from live counts and camera plate reads. Livia uses them to suggest the best place to park and to find a guest's car; Augustus lets a manager hold a level FULL or redirect drivers in one sentence. Try it in the live demo.
Questions
What is a parking guidance system?
A parking guidance system (PGS) counts free spaces and tells drivers where they are before they start circling: LED signs at the entrance and at each decision point show free spaces by level or zone with arrows, bay lights show free spaces from the aisle, and apps show live availability.
What is the difference between parking counting and parking guidance?
Counting knows how many spaces are free in the facility, level or zone, usually from entrance and exit counts. Guidance goes further and shows drivers where those spaces are, often down to the individual bay, using sensors or cameras over each space.
Ultrasonic sensors or cameras?
Ultrasonic sensors detect one bay each and are simple and proven. Camera-based sensors cover several bays per unit and can also read plates, which enables find-my-car and gives evidence for disputes. Many facilities choose cameras for new installations and keep ultrasonic sensors where they already work.
How accurate are parking counting systems?
Bay-level sensors and cameras are typically more accurate than entrance and exit counting, which drifts and needs regular correction. Ask vendors for accuracy measured at facilities like yours, and how quickly a wrong count is detected and fixed.
Does a parking guidance system increase revenue?
Indirectly: drivers find spaces faster, the top levels actually get used, entry lines move, and occupancy data supports better rates and reservations. It also makes the visit feel looked after, which matters most at hotels, hospitals and venues.
Can AI control the parking guidance signs?
Yes. With AugustusAgent, the signs update from live counts, and a manager can tell Augustus to hold a level FULL, send drivers to another zone, or change what a sign shows, in a sentence. Livia uses the same counts to suggest the best place to park and to find a guest's car.
